Spotify and Universal Music Group announced today that a new deal will allow Spotify to allow new albums to be streamed by premium users- up to 2 weeks before the album comes out/ is available to free users.
This is a huge leg up for Spotify, in an arena that has become more crowded by streaming services. Spotify will now embody what many console gaming companies have adopted- the power of exclusivity. Although it is only a small release advantage, it might help convert users when their Spotify using friends are streaming albums before them.
It will be interesting to see how the market reacts and if any other streaming companies try to counter with some sort of better deal for premium users.
