Google Maps most recent update will add location sharing to both iOS and Android apps. A “share location” button will be added to the app’s navigation, allowing users to share their location (helpful for navigating to someone) for a set period of time. The other added benefit is users will be able to track the estimated time of arrival as the shared location updates (through a “share trip” button).
The feature will be available soon per Google, but no exact date has been released. This feature will add some of the added benefits that other location sharing applications give, but allowed through the user’s discretion and specific times.

It looks like location sharing has picked up steam across another app, as Facebook Messenger has announced similar location sharing capabilities.
